Author of How to Stay Healthy & Still Eat Chocolate, the essential guide to creating a healthy home environment, diet & lifestyle.
I come from a family of three generations of medical women: my grandmother and aunt were physicians and my sister spent over a decade as a maxillofacial prosthetist. (She is now a sculptor.) Despite the presence of all this medical science in my life, I was drawn to natural healing methods, even as a young teenager. Providing the body with nutrition, exercise and a healthy environment made sense to me, as did recognizing the presence and action of the human energy field, something all cultures, with the exception of Western science, have worked with in their healing practices for thousands of years.
For 15 years, I ran a private practice working with clients who had multiple chemical and environmental sensitivities and food intolerances, using applied kinesiology, acupressure (a form of energy therapy) and non-invasive desensitization methods. These methods were highly effective, especially when combined with lifestyle change, but I found I wanted an even more elegant energy therapy—something that was quicker and more efficient. In working with energy therapy, I came to the conclusion that human emotions and spirit play a major role in health and that working primarily with the body was paying attention to the symptoms instead of addressing the causes of the problems.
Eventually, I discovered EFT, the Emotional Freedom Techniques and was probably even more thrilled than Stanley finding Dr. Livingston. EFT was exactly what I had been looking for and is now a central focus of my work. (For more information, go to the EFT page.) One of the great beauties of this form of energy therapy is that when you have a complex or challenging problem, you can have a session with someone like me AND, for everyday stuff, you can also learn to do EFT on yourself fairly easily. So you don’t always have to wait around for the therapist to be available when you’re uncomfortable! Now that’s an elegant therapy.
Having worn glasses from the age of 12, I was very excited when I learned that deteriorating eyesight is not an inevitable part of life! When I found that it was actually possible to improve my eyes, I took classes and was able to reduce my prescription, relax my eyes, and release old patterns of fear and anxiety that kept me stuck in limited vision. This was too good to keep to myself, so I trained in Natural Vision Improvement and became a Certified Vision Educator.
A couple of years ago, I wrote a book called, How to Stay Healthy & still Eat Chocolate, the essential guide to creating a healthy home environment, diet & lifestyle, which was featured on CBC radio, Breakfast Television, Global TV’s Body & Health, Roger’s Cable Network, Australian Talk Radio, and some other media outlets. The book is not about eating chocolate. The chocolate in the title is a metaphor for those guilty pleasures we’re always told will ruin our health if we over-indulge. The book is actually about getting toxins out of your home environment, lifestyle, and food, and replacing them with healthy choices. When you do that, your immune system can handle a little indulgence better than when it’s maxed out trying to cope with a poisonous stew of chemical products and low-nutrient foods.
I work with and teach Non-Violent Communication, which is about offering empathy and compassion not only to other people but to yourself. NVC makes life easier and more joyful by helping us create peace when we communicate rather than violence and hurt feelings. (See “My Amazing NVC Experience.”)
I’ve learned what it means to be a Highly Sensitive Person and use this knowledge in my work with students and clients who are also Highly Sensitive. HSP’s have nervous systems that receive more inputs on more levels than most peoples’. This is not a neurosis or a problem, it’s a norm that applies to only 15-20% of the population, so naturally we seem a bit different to others! That’s okay. Throughout the centuries, artists, writers, poets, healers, counsellors, visionaries, and spiritual leaders have been HSP’s. We are natural candidates for EFT, as it calms and balances the nervous system while shifting stuck emotional patterns.
Before I began to study natural health and personal potential full-time as a private scholar and educator, I took a degree at Queen’s University.
Ultimately, I hope you will experience more joy in your life, through this or any other healing work you do.
